While the tug of war between form and function has been a constant, today, in the 21st Century, we seem to have reached a place where end-users want the best of both.

Comprised of large pieces of fabric, being a curtain supplier and maker, it is no surprise that curtains hold a special place in our hearts. Seemingly simple, though, many different parts of a curtain lend the final touch to any room in the house, and although most of us might have seen these, not all of us know what they are called.

To go over them briefly, there is the curtain itself. A panel of fabric that comes in various materials, colors, sizes and prints, these can be used either as a single panel curtain that covers the span of the entire door, window, or opening, or as a panel pair that comes in two parts.

These curtains can be installed in a variety of ways, most commonly across a rod that is attached to the wall. The loop or ‘tab’ that slides into the rod also come in a variety of shapes and forms. While some people choose to leave it as is, many others choose to conceal this fitment with either a pelmet or valance. A pelmet is a rectangle panel of wood or fabric that is placed in front of the fitment to conceal it, whereas a valance is a more decorative piece made of fabric that is pleated tightly to form something like a frill.

Other add-ons to curtains can be the window scarf and liner. A window scarf is primarily placed for decorative purposes above the curtain while a liner is an external attachment put on the curtain to increase its thickness and make it opaque.

The choice of all of the above parts of the curtain take care of the aesthetic of the room, lending a classic, contemporary, casual, or modern vibe.

Most commonly, these are selected on basis of the purpose, theme, and occupant of the room. While fun, vibrant, printed curtains might be common in children’s bedrooms, rich, earthy, solid or printed curtains are seen in the master bedrooms. Transitional or common spaces in the home, including the guest rooms, are styled with either neutral curtains with self-print or solid colors to maintain a warm, pleasing atmosphere, or in bright colors to provide accents to an otherwise neutral space. Kitchen linen, however, can be either cool and neutral, or warm, bright, and stimulating, depending on the theme or desired effect.

The choice of material is more relevant to the functionality of a curtain. If one wants access to natural light they can choose sheer or semi-opaque curtains in fabrics like lace or cotton. The same curtains can be fixed up with liners or have an opaque curtain with thicker fabric like linen, velvet, or burlap, to block out extremely harsh light if needed.

Apart from these functional and aesthetic aspects of curtains, one thing that excites us the most is how adaptable and impactful, this product can be to a room. Just like getting a haircut or staying fit, sprucing up our homes is an important aspect of our lives. As time goes by, our needs, tastes, and lives, in general might have us wanting to change our spaces as well.

While we cannot end up really revamping everything else, even just mixing up and trying out new styles of curtains and other soft furnishings can make the difference, changing how we feel in that room in every way.
